Next Meeting

Tuesday, Oct. 10, 7:00 PM
9100 113th Street North SEMINOLE

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The meeting was opened by Vice President Bill Briggs. The minutes of the last meeting were accepted. Treasurer Judy Wolf read her report and it was accepted by vote. We were happy to welcome Judy's 97 year old mother at the meeting.

OLD BUSINESS
None.

NEW BUSINESS
Bill Briggs noted the passing of Club member Gail Fruehling on September 24. Several members attended the service in Tampa. The cover for the church bulletin at the memorial service showed a palette of Gail's carved roses. Judy noted that she had sent a $50 contribution to Clearwater Hospice in remembrance.

Bill Briggs disclosed his first monthly carving challenge. At the October business meeting, he distributed clean basswood paint stirrers with the challenge to carve or decorate them in any way before the next business meeting. Bring them in and we'll circulate them and appreciate them. There will be no winners or losers, but we can all benefit from each other's creativity.

Next month's challenge will be announced and supplies provided at the next business meeting, which will be at 7 PM on Tuesday, November 10 at the Seminole Recreation Center.

John Roush received two phone calls from prospective vendors for the January, 2010 show. One is Cheryl Dow, noted pyrographic artist and woodcarver. The back cover of the current CHIP CHATS shows an owl carved and painted by Cheryl. The other call was from Paul Miller from Fox Carving. Both are interested in being vendors at the show. No wood vendor has yet committed to the show.

Bill Briggs announced that our local Woodcraft Supply store is changing their policy on Club discounts. We'll discuss this in more detail at the next meeting.

50/50
Bill Dewald was the winner and donated his winnings to the Club.

SHOW AND TELL
Joe Kane showed his no butt cowboy carved from a roughout at Doane College in Crete, Nebraska. The instructor was Keith Morrill, who manages a carving museum in South Dakota. It was a well done caricature. He also showed a wood turning that included 2 small mallets.

Carmen Zeoli showed a sunflower in shallow bas relief in basswood. Maybe he'll paint it.

John Roush showed a nautical woodburned plaque that he did at Workshop and an in-process pair of squirrels. He noted that the plaque was pine, and after sanding with 4 fine grits, it burned evenly. He used Abranet sanding material from Finland.

Karl Allison showed his finally finished Chris Howard butternut Indian, with a BRIWAX finish and explained the process.

Bill Dewald showed his second Leah Drummond rabbit. The coloration certainly differs from the first one done under Leah's direction, but both are great to have around the house.

The meeting was adjourned.

NOTES The Florida Woodcarvers Roundup, which was held at Hillsborough River State Park near Tampa in March, 2009, was scheduled for March, 2010 in the same location. However, it is on hold for 2010, according to Jim O'Dea in his latest update at http://webspace.webring.com/people/qj/jeodea/. See below.

From the website: The Roundup is on hold. We have run into more complications on getting the Park for this event, so don't make anymore reservations at the Park or Motel. Hold on to the ones you have while we sort this out. After spending the summer ironing out the Parks issues, they have now introduced a completely new set of requirements, many of which we cannot meet. Check back here next month to see where we are at in resolving this or finding a new location.
