SUNCOAST
WOODCARVERS MEETING MINUTES
September
13, 2011
Seminole
Recreation Center
President Alan Anderson opened the
meeting with a welcome and gained acceptance for the minutes from the May, 2011
meeting.
Treasurer Judy Wolf had distributed
copies of her report covering the months of May, June, July, and August,
2011. The report was accepted by vote.
Vice President Bill Briggs presented an
award of a WD-40 pin to ardent supporter of the product, Joe Kane.
New member Glad McCurtain was recognized.
OLD
BUSINESS
President Alan has purchased a display
case, which is located in the lobby of the Seminole Rec. Center. It will contain displays of the members’
carvings. Alan asked for a volunteer to
be responsible for its maintenance. Bob
Vinas brought forth a plaque awarded to the Club years ago for donations to
Children’s Hospital. It will be shown
initially in the Club display case.
NEW
BUSINESS
John Roush reported action
he took to correct the listing for our January, 2012 Annual Show. CHIP CHATS had reported it incorrectly twice
and will correctly report it in the Nov./Dec. issue.
To keep financial issues
in perspective, Judy Wolf indicated the costs we must pay up front for 2012 in
relation to our current balance.
Bill Briggs announced that
the Club storage trailer has a valid Florida license plate installed,
permitting transport of the Annual Show equipment to the Rec. Center in
January.
Alan reported that King
Arthur Tools is expanding into Florida and will set up and demonstrate items in
the Craft Room at Workshop on Tuesday morning, October 11, in parallel with our
normal carving. Someone will be the
lucky winner of one of their tools.
Joe Kane and his Bag of
Tricks was next. Included were tips on
cleaning rotary tool bits, collets vs. chucks in rotary tools, the use of self
healing quilting mats as knife hones, debunking some money saving schemes, and
finally, if you break items containing mercury or other hazardous materials, do
not clean it up with a vacuum sweeper.
Use manual means to avoid spreading the contamination.
PRESIDENT’S
CHALLENGE
Two spring clothes pins
were made available at the May meeting and subsequently. It was carvers’ choice.

elements of the American or Canadian flag.

50/50
Glad McCurtain won the
50/50.
SHOW
AND TELL

Bill Dewald showed 4 items
completed during the summer. There were
two river otters in a field of underwater grass, a running river otter, a
seated raccoon, and a polar bear. All
were bass wood, with carved and/or wood burned surfaces, painted with acrylics
and dry brushed.

Bob Marek showed a tableau
which included a rodeo clown carved at Doane College, Nebraska and two added
characters, a Brahma bull, and a rodeo bull rider.

Bob Vinas showed a cane
consisting of an eight sided taper and a handle of a Tom Wolfe elephant head
and a curved cane handle. He also
showed a pheasant feather and a curvaceous leaf.
\

Mark Daly showed a
canvasback duck ready for finishing. He
also commented on the hurricane’s effect on him and his property.

Ray Muncy showed a cane
with carved raccoons entering and leaving.
He was wearing his striped wooden necktie over his tee shirt.
Karl Allison described how
he had taken the springs from the clothes pins from the President’s Challenge,
straightened the wire, sharpened them, heat treated them, and made them into 2
miniature tools.

He then conducted a raffle
by selecting a number between 1 and 50.
Everyone chose a number, which Karl recorded. His number was 31, and the closest guesses were 32 and 34. The winners were David Watson and Donald
McKerrow.
