SUNCOAST WOODCARVERS
CHIPS VOL XXIV ISS 7

VICE
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE, SEPTEMBER, 2009
I would like to thank all
of the Club members who carved on Tuesdays all summer long. We had a lot of members this year. Summer is now over and we should be seeing
our winter carvers slowly coming back.
We will be having a few
new carving challenges at our monthly business meetings, starting in
October. This will be a new mystery
challenge. Each month will be a
different challenge throughout the year.
Anyone who would like to share their tips or instructions, please get in
touch with me.
We look forward to seeing
everyone soon.

SUNCOAST
WOODCARVERS MEETING MINUTES
September
8, 2009
Seminole
Recreation Center
The first meeting of the
Fall was called to order by Bill Dewald, Secretary, in the absence of President
Andy Szymaszek and Vice President Bill Briggs.
The minutes of the May meeting were accepted. Treasurer Judy Wolf distributed her report, covering the period
May, June, July, and August. The
balance on 8/31/09 was the highest in recent memory, largely due to the
attendance at the Tuesday morning Workshops.
Judy reminded us that there are many bills to be paid in the future.

SHOW
AND TELL
Jack Stewart showed a
Floyd Rhadigan design carved at the Evert Michigan Roundup. The carving was artfully painted by wife
Diane.
Bill Dewald showed a
completed female head carved from a 7x7x9 inch basswood glue-up. A head, bought at the Sarasota Show, was the
inspiration and model for this carving.
Several items prepared for painting by the Leah Drummond technique were
shown. They were a squirrel, rabbit,
fox, and wolf. A finished Chris Howard
Indian roughout, painted with acrylics was also displayed.
Karl Allison showed his
in-process carving of Christ on the cross, sans the cross. This was carved at Karl’s annual attendance
at Doane College, Crete, Nebraska. He
also showed a Chris Howard Indian bust which was finished for all intents and
purposes.
Joe Kane, also attending
at Doane and for the first time did a cowboy.
To keep it all in the family, the wives of both Karl and Joe took a
course in woodburning and increased their skills.
50/50
The winner was Jack
Stewart.
PROGRAM
PRESENTATION
John Roush brought a lot
of his woodburnings, many of which were circulated to the small crowd during
the presentation. He surprised most of
the audience by stating that he used just three Colwood tips on most of the
burnings. They were the “S” (bent shader),
“M” (small spear) and “C” (signature).
John emphasized surface preparation.
He uses Abranet open grid sanding medium and runs the gamut from 320 to
600 grit and finishes it off with crumpled Kraft paper. John uses color, sparingly applied by colored
hard lead pencils. He uses a blender of
tightly rolled paper to smooth out the colored pencil strokes. The result is a continuing stream of
attractive, finished work completed often within the Tuesday morning Workshop
session. Thanks John.
NOTES
The next scheduled Club
business meeting is at 7 PM on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at the Seminole Recreation
Center. Workshop sessions will continue
at 8:30 – 11:30 AM on Tuesdays in the same location.
