CHIPS VOL XXVI ISS 3
MARCH 19, 2011
PRESIDENT’S
MESSAGE, MARCH, 2011
I would like
to thank Bill Briggs, Judy Wolf, Bill Dewald, Joe Lutz, John Roush, Rich Samay,
and Ed Livingston for all the things that they helped our club accomplish in
the past year.
I am very happy to welcome Tampa Woodcarvers into our fold. I am
very sure that this will be a good step for both clubs.
The president's challenge for this month is for each person to
carve a name tag. This is a challenge put forward for all members whether at
the business meeting or not. We have plenty of pins for backs or Joe Kane can
get magnets if you prefer ($2.00).
When I came home from the March business meeting, I noticed that I
had a message on my phone. Bill Brigg's son called and told me that Bill was
put back into the hospital, hence the need for me to run the business meeting.
Please keep Bill in your prayers for a speedy recovery.
Peace,
Alan Anderson
SUNCOAST
WOODCARVERS MEETING MINUTES
March
15, 2011
Seminole
Recreation Center
The meeting was called to
order by Vice President Alan Anderson in the absence of President Bill
Briggs.
Treasurer Judy Wolf had
distributed her report for January, February, and the Annual Show. There were no comments, and it was accepted.
Election of officers was
conducted by Secretary Bill Dewald.
Alan Anderson automatically advanced to the Presidency. There were no nominations from the floor, so
a vote was held on the following proposed slate:
·
Vice
President – Bill Briggs
·
Secretary –
Bill Dewald
·
Treasurer –
Judy Wolf
The slate was elected unanimously by a
show of hands.
Alan covered a number of
subjects of interest, including positive comments on the previous officers and
Jan Hytrek, who assists the Secretary in issuing CHIPS and the membership list.
Website - http://suncoastwoodcarvers.com.
Alan commented that the website is looking good. The Webmaster is Richard Samay, who also
provided the photos for this issue of CHIPS.
Storage
of Show Items –
Discussion was deferred to the next meeting, as Bill Briggs has current info on
his search. Later in the meeting, Carl
Smith noted that the trailer park where he resides locally would permit a
trailer to be parked there and that he would volunteer to build one during the
summer. He has built such a unit on a
trailer base before.
OLD
BUSINESS
At the last meeting, Alan
had proposed that the Club consider allowing the Tampa Woodcarvers to join with
us as a satellite. They are currently a
group of eight under the leadership of John Simpson, an instructor certified in
Hillsborough County. They are associated with the Sarasota Club, but find the
distance too great to integrate well.
Alan listed a number of positive results in joining the groups. After some discussion, the membership voted
to accept the proposal and implement it.
The By-Laws will be modified by the Secretary to reflect the
change. Alan will take the lead in the
integration.
NEW
BUSINESS
The Florida Roundup is
scheduled for March 23-26 at Bahr’s Mobile Home Owners CO-OP INC., 39444
Dancers Lane, Zephyrhills, FL. It is located on RT54 east, about 1.3
miles east of the SR301 and RT54 east intersection. See the Upcoming Events Section for the website link. Bill Dewald asked if any who plan to attend
the Roundup have been informed by Lucille Erickson of their course
assignments. No one had heard.
The President’s Challenge
for April is for members to wear carved badges bearing their name at Tuesday
Workshops and the Business Meeting.
50/50
Bill Dewald was the lucky
one, and the Club is the beneficiary.
JOE
KANE’S BAG OF TRICKS
Joe covered a number of
subjects including the use of tools, tool sharpening, plumbing problems, and
novel solutions.
SHOW
AND TELL
Andy Szymaszek showed a
carved rose in rosewood and cedar. The
rosewood is hard to carve, but takes a beautiful finish. See below.

Bill Dewald has two items
in progress, the river otters from Desiree Hajny’s course in January, and a
bear is to be completed in Leah Goddard’s course at the Florida Roundup.
Jerry Moore showed a cedar
cane with an octopus head. The shaft was red heartwood and the octopus was
white sapwood. Striking.
Jack Stewart showed a
wooden case containing characters from the Xmas manger scene, all tucked neatly
into their own little spaces.
Novel. The painting was done by
Diane.
Nick Stella showed works
in progress in the form of chip carved boxes.
They were circulated through the members. See below.
