PRESIDENT’S
MESSAGE, MARCH, 2010
A big thank you to
outgoing President Andy Szymaszek and his team for a great year. Welcome to Al Anderson (Vice Pres.), Bill
Dewald (Secretary), Judy Wolf (Treasurer), Joe Lutz (Show Chairman), and
Richard Samay (Club website). Welcome
to all the new Club members and a safe summer to all the members going home. We look forward to seeing you all in the
fall. Don’t forget we need carvings and
finished cane blocks for the Show next January. Thank you and have a safe summer.

SUNCOAST
WOODCARVERS MEETING MINUTES
March
16, 2010
Seminole
Recreation Center
President Andy Szymaszek opened
the meeting and obtained agreement with the minutes of the February
meeting. A voice vote accepted the
Treasurer’s Report, read and distributed by Judy Wolf.
Andy asked any new members
to rise and introduce themselves. Bill
and Greta Murphy did so.
The next item was the
election of officers for the next term.
The slate was:
President: Bill
Briggs – automatic advance from Vice President
Vice President: Alan Anderson – includes
responsibility for membership
Treasurer: Judy
Wolf
Secretary: Bill
Dewald
There were no nominations
from the floor. The vote accepting the
slate was unanimous. Andy handed the
gavel over to new President Bill Briggs.
Andy announced that the
club had sent a donation of $50 to the American Cancer Society in remembrance
of Linda Pelachik.
OLD
BUSINESS
Andy reminded the members
again of the 2010 Florida Carvers Roundup to be held March 24-27 near
Zephyrhills at Bahr’s Mobile Home Park.
Directions were given.
Show Chairman Joe Lutz described
the review of a facility in Clearwater as a possible alternate for the Rec.
Center. A number of comparisons were
made between facilities and features.
Some problem areas were parking, electrical connections, and food
service at the Long Facility, where floor space was the principal
advantage. No decisions were made.
Andy asked for comments
from the floor and Carl Smith suggested we notify the clubs in the surrounding
area of our Show plans.
50-50
Carl Smith was the winner.
SHOW
AND TELL
Joe Kane showed a mallet
turned on a lathe and discussed how he got the ultra smooth finish.
Bill Dewald showed the
partially prepared red fox for Leah’s class at the Roundup.
Joe Lutz woodburned the
carving challenge wooden spoon, distributed at the last meeting. It was the only item.
Andy encouraged members to
start carving a block for the Friendship Cane.
Maybe we can get enough for two canes.
Karl Allison commented
positively on the one day show he attended in Arcadia. He thought it was on a par with the Fort
Myers show in size and number of vendors.
It is not a judged competition show.
The focus is on table display and sales. Time of travel is about the same as to Sarasota.
President Bill Briggs
adjourned the meeting.
The next business meeting is
at 7PM on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at the Seminole Rec. Center. We hope to see you there.
Bill Dewald, Secretary
