CHIPS VOL XXVI ISS 1

JANUARY 22, 2011

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE, JANUARY, 2011

Fellow Woodcarvers,

Now that the 2011 Suncoast Woodcarvers Show is on the books, I would like to thank everyone who had a big part in the Club Show. We are now in the beginning of next year’s Carving Show. The board has a lot of work ahead of them.  Some new ideas are in the works. Congratulations to all the winners. Do not forget the Tuesday morning Carving Workshops.

Safe carving,

Bill Briggs, Jr.

SUNCOAST WOODCARVERS MEETING MINUTES

January 11, 2011

Seminole Recreation Center

President Bill Briggs opened the meeting and had no comments on the minutes of the December meeting.  Treasurer Judy Wolf provided copies of her report, reviewed it, and approval was obtained.  Of note was the payment for 2011 for room rental for both the Tuesday morning Workshops and the monthly meetings.  There were no visitors or new members.

OLD BUSINESS
There were no items in this category.

NEW BUSINESS
Most of the remainder of the meeting was devoted to preparations for the Annual Show, which would occur the following weekend (Saturday, January 15 and Sunday, January 16).  Show Chairman Joe Lutz made the presentation and led the discussion.  Joe discussed the availability of vendors and the last minute problem of replacing Don Burghy, who had an operation scheduled.  With advice from the Calusa Club, Carl Roadner from Sarasota became available.  He is a Dremel distributor and handles other lines.  A number of items have become available from manufacturers (Flexcut, Colwood), publications and vendors of equipment to be used in drawing, in addition to our Friendship Cane.

The schedule for set up for the Show was predicted for 10:30 Friday, January 14, as the rented tables were expected to be delivered by that time.  Volunteers were needed for table set up in the proper arrangement and application of the plastic table coverings and plastic skirts.  At least 5 tables remained to be rented.

Registration of carvings was planned for Friday from 9AM to 4PM and on Saturday from 8:30AM to 9AM.  Judging for the Judged Competition would occur from 9AM to 10AM Saturday, at which time the doors would open to the public.

Several discussions occurred on the cost of entering carvings in the Show, both for the Judged Competition and People’s Choice.  Several exceptions to the Club By-Laws were made:  as written, a separate fee is required for each.  This was changed to a single fee for both during the registration period.  Only three Levels are called out in the By-Laws.  An Open Level was added to be consistent with the Judged Competition Levels.  This then permits two rather than a single entry in People’s Choice.

Further discussion on limitations on entry of items that had previously won ribbons in the Judged Competition and People’s Choice failed to fully clarify the requirements.

Karl Allison, who operates the painting session for kids at the Show, asked for donations of paint in bottles nearly empty.  The items to be painted are little bird houses and a variety of items left over from last year’s Show.

SHOW AND TELL

Jack Stewart displayed several small carvings of caricature bears.

50/50

The winner was Bill Briggs.

NOTES

The next Business Meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at 7 PM at the Seminole Recreation Center.
